A Model of Regional Development Empowered by Applied Research

As one of the first institutions in Shandong Province to receive support for the development of applied undergraduate universities, Qingdao Binhai University has always adhered to the development philosophy of "scientific research as the foundation and service as the driver," building a regionally distinctive scientific research and innovation system. Since 2020, the university has achieved significant results in scientific research innovation, technology transfer, and social services through a dual-track approach of vertical project breakthroughs and horizontal project services, forming the "Binhai Model" of empowering regional economic development.

I. Dual-Track Scientific Research Projects: Building a Collaborative Innovation Framework

The university implements a "vertical strengthening, horizontal empowerment" strategy for scientific research, achieving breakthroughs in both basic and applied research.

  • Vertical Research: Over 160 provincial and ministerial-level scientific research projects have been approved, including the National Natural Science Foundation, the National Social Science Foundation, Shandong Provincial Key R&D Programs, and Shandong Natural Science Foundation. Key research areas include advanced functional materials, precision medicine, and the digital economy.

  • Horizontal Services: The university has signed over 1,300 technology development and consulting service projects with more than 700 enterprises and institutions, including the Sejong Institute Foundation of Korea, Qingdao Mingyue Seaweed Group, and Qingdao Juchuan Environmental Protection Technology Co., Ltd. These projects, with a total contract value of 224 million yuan, have achieved breakthroughs in key technologies such as metal surface treatment and medical information system development, contributing Binhai's strength to regional economic and social development.

II. Formation of an Innovation Platform Matrix: Creating an Industrial Service Hub

The university has established a complete scientific research platform system covering the entire chain from basic research to technology development and achievement transformation, with a total of 19 research platforms. Key platforms include:

III. Talent Team Development: Stimulating Innovation Potential

The university adopts a talent development model of "discipline leaders + innovation teams + young talents," forming 15 distinctive research teams, including:

IV. Continuous Emergence of Innovative Achievements: Enhanced Technology Transfer

The university's scientific research output has seen simultaneous improvement in both quality and quantity. It has published over 1,200 academic papers, including more than 300 high-quality papers indexed in SCI and SSCI. More than 140 books have been published, including Non-Motor Symptoms of Parkinson's Disease, Essentials of Clinical Neurological Disease Management, Research on Digital Protection and Inheritance of Village Cultural Heritage, and Research on Maocao Scripts and Social Culture. Among them, Plastic Forming Technology and Mold Design has been adopted as a textbook by multiple universities in China.

  • Intellectual Property: The university has been granted over 400 patents and registered more than 90 software copyrights.

V. Standardization Leading Industrial Upgrading: An Improved Innovation Ecosystem

In terms of standardization, the university has participated in the development of 11 standards, including:

  • National Standards:

    • Basic Model for Medical Equipment Information Integration

  • Industry Standards:

    • General Data Model Expression and Interface Requirements for Industrial Software

  • Group Standards:

    • Platinum-Aluminum Coating Technology for Gas Turbine Blades

The university has received over 500 research achievement awards at the national and local levels, including 32 major provincial and ministerial science and technology awards and 196 key municipal and departmental research awards, covering the entire innovation chain from basic research to applied development and technology transfer, fully demonstrating its research strength and effectiveness.

VI. Complete Innovation Chain: Driving Regional Economic Development

Over the past five years, Qingdao Binhai University has formed a complete innovation chain of "demand-oriented – platform support – team collaboration – achievement transformation – standardization leadership." In the future, the university will continue to deepen industry-education integration, focus on building modern industry colleges such as intelligent equipment and digital healthcare, and create a highland for scientific and technological innovation based in Qingdao, radiating across Jiaodong, and serving the entire country, continuously injecting "Binhai Momentum" into the high-quality development of the regional economy.
